Three steps to restore bay and its marine animals

  1. ban the fishing of bass and crabs

  2. introduce oysters which are resistant to diseases

  3. convince farmers to reduce fertilizer use

The reading passage explores the issue of restoring the bay and gives three steps to achieve this goal. However, according to the professor in the listening material, none of these three steps is practical.

According to the reading passage, the first step is to ban the fishing of bass and crabs. Yet the lecturer in the listening argues that since some fishermen make their living by the fishing of bass and crabs in the bay. So it is impossible to ban the fishing of bass and crabs as this would completely cut the income of those fish men.

Another step given in the reading passage is to introduce oysters which are resistant to the diseases. But the speaker in the listening refutes this idea by stating that the introduction of new species into the bay may bring unknown diseases and other risks. It is not sensible to introduce new marine organisms without a thorough investigating of the potential harm and risks to the bay.

The third step presented in the reading passage is to motivate farmers to reduce fertilizer use. Although it seems plausible as argued in the reading, the professor in the listening contends that this is not practical as well. As the bay covers several square miles and there are six different states that share this bay, it is unrealistic to convince farmers in all the six different states to reduce their fertilizer use and worse still, it may provoke campaign.

Do you agree or disagree with following statement?

When you make a presentation, which method do you think is better to help you find weaknesses and improve your presentation skills?

  1) record the presentation and watch the video by yourself

  2) ask others for advice

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

审题注意要点:要论述哪一个方式“better”,同时要注意是 “help you find weaknesses”和“improve your presentation skills”

  本文立场:the second method is better.

Making presentation is quite common in our daily life: students make presentation to show their study in class, employees make presentation to report their performance in the meetings, and bosses introduce new products in the product launches. Improving presentation skills is thus of quite importance. As far as I am concerned, compared with watching the video of my presentation, asking others for advice is better to spot my weaknesses and improve my presentation skills.

Looking from another perspective by others can spot the flaws of my presentation more easily. It is generally acknowledged that people see things through different perspectives and individuals are usually impossible to see all the shortcomings of themselves. If others watch my presentation, they can find the weaknesses which it may not emerge from my angle more easily. For example, at the studio, actors/actresses usually need others, such as the movie director, to give advice for their performance when shooting a movie, since they may not be able to find their own defects. The director sees from a different perspective and can find some defects in the performance. With the help of the advice from the director, the performers may do a second shooting and finally achieve a movie of high quality.

Asking advice from others can contribute better to the improving of my presentation skills. If I ask advice from people who watch my presentation, their may give me new technique of presentation, such as the tone, body gesture and even my PowerPoint slides. Advice of these elements in my presentation is definitely to lift my presentation skills to a higher level and it is not possible to achieve such a progress if I watch my presentation video alone, obviously. It is reported that TED speakers will do a multiple of rehearsals of speech and collect advice from others about their tone, body gesture and even facial expressions in order to better their presentation skills. It is with all the suggestions from others the TED speakers are making increasing progress of their presentation skill and finally give an outstanding speech.

From the analysis above, it can be concluded that asking others for advice can help me to spot my weaknesses more easily and give me new tips to improve my presentation skill, hence a better method.
