我们先来看两个句子：
◆ Investors sold the stock rapidly, CAUSING panic.
◆ Investors sold the stock rapidly TO CAUSE panic.
看出意思上的差别了吗?分词表示的是一种结果，但是我们不知道investors 的用意，恐慌是有意识的还是无恴造成的。而对于不定式，investors 的用意就是要造成恐慌，但是对于不定式我们不知道这个动作所造成的后果。我们还要注意其他修饰语所产生的不同句意，如从句：
◆ A technique ALLEVIATING pain is growing popular.
◆ A technique THAT ALLEVIATES pain is growing popular.
◆ A technique TO ALLEVIATE pain is growing popular.
用现在分词和从句表达的意思其实差不多，technique 是alleviate 的发起者，但如果使用不定式则technique 就不是alleviate 的发起者。
下面我们就来练一道题目：
Although some consultants insist that agencies should offer all-inclusive fixed-agenda packages to overseas travelers, others advise that travelers will plan a trip only if time would be set aside for separately spontaneous excursions.
A only if time would be set aside for separately spontaneous excursions

解析：
这题是个句意题，正确答案在于理解句意。句子的本意是说，一些人建议要为客户提供全方位固定日程的产品，但是另一些人不支持这个建议，因为他们认为客户们是先划出时间，然后才会计划旅行，也就是说客户只有在有时间的情况下才会计划旅行，所以固定日程的产品没法迎合客户不定时的时间需要。所以选B
A “would be”这个时态不对。
C 改变原意了。C说的是如果客户仅仅划出xxx时间，他们将会计划旅行，逻辑不通。另外excursions spontaneously separate这个顺序也不对。
D 中的was时态不对，only的位置也不对。
E would时态不对，only的位置改变原意，这里说只有时间被划出，意思是其他没有被set aside。

简单想，although consultants insist...,others advise that。这里：subjuct will do..,if...does(一般现在时)。就是从句套从句。
在官方OG13的第40题解释中说到：The important thing to notice here is the following logical relation: X will do something only if Y does something else。可以理解为GMAT 对于only if 和 if 没有区分。然后， 我们利用这一知识点，判断 if 后面动词的时态，排除A、D、E。C 中excursions spontaneously separate 修饰语顺序错误。故选B。separate 和 spontaneous 都是修饰 excursions 的，当两个形容词修饰同一个名词时，可以用逗号隔开，逗号表示and。
