考陶尔德艺术学院最早于1932年建校，是一所自制大学，由考陶尔德当地的慈善家和艺术收藏家共同建立。该学院的最初校址在波特曼广场的霍姆宫，于1989年迁往萨摩塞特宫，并于2007年庆祝该校的75周年。 考陶尔德艺术学院是世界上开展研究艺术和建筑的历史及修复的几个主要学校之一，其中该校的画廊被列为英国最受欢迎的收藏品画廊。考陶尔德艺术学院以收藏许多绘画大师、印象派画家、及后印象派的油画、雕塑、印刷品及装饰艺术的作品而著名。
